In June 2010, I was invited to be a part of the Variety of Chefs charity dinner held at the Brisbane Convention Centre. This night was dedicated to the daughter of Russell Armstrong (a respected member or the industry and also close personal friend), who lost her long battle with cancer earlier this year.
Having a young family of my own, it really hit home – we all need to cherish each moment with our loved ones and never take for granted the simple things in life. It was a poignant reminder that work is not the most important thing in my life, and a lesson to explore other avenues that can also bring happiness. For me, my other passion is riding my road and mountain bikes with friends, family and associates. Actually who am I kidding, anyone who is keen to come riding with me will do!!
So I decided to find a way to combine my passion with my desire to help others less fortunate than myself.
My head chef Todd and I have always shared a healthy competitiveness in the kitchen – whether it be who could bone out a chicken or fillet a fish the fastest, to who could run 10km the quickest. After conducting some research into which competitions were out there that we could race each other in, we thought it would be best to compete for a cause as a team – rather than indulge our individual egos (OK maybe we’re still doing it for our egos just a little bit…:p).
So, for reasons first mentioned, our chosen cause is Variety Queensland, an organisation dedicated to transforming the lives of sick, disabled and disadvantaged children, and we ask you to support us in our quest also, either through donation or by emailing me at kitchen@urbanerestaurant.com and becoming a team member. By choosing to become a team member, you nominate to join our team and our quest to raise money for Variety Queensland!
Urbane will be sponsoring Todd Adams and myself, to compete in three upcoming bike riding events in 2010. These are 2010 Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW Ride for Life Challenge, The Sirromet Dirty Duo, and The Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge. I’d also like to say a big thank you to Fusion Cycles and Chain Gang who have provided us with technical support and by giving us a pretty good discount towards our bikes and accessories! Yay!
Five cents from every dollar raised by Todd and I will be matched by the Urbane team.
Donations are made through Everyday Hero, who process every donation, issue tax deductible receipts (if applicable) to the donor immediately by email, and pay the money directly into Variety Queensland’s account.

Thanks for choosing to support us!
Cheers
