The Laneway’s Pez takes national title!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

The Laneway’s Perryn (Pez) Collier has won the Australian Gin Mare Mediterranean Inspirations title in Sydney against 8 other cocktail specialists from across the country. Part of a global competition, Pez will now fly the flag for Australia in Ibiza in September in the international finals – it’s one of the hottest cocktail competitions on the planet.

Only recently introduced to Australia, Gin Mare is the first super premium Mediterranean Gin, created using botanicals from the Mediterranean basin – Arbequina olives, thyme, rosemary and basil. The competition saw Pez create two cocktails – the first inspired by the concept of “Mare Nostrum” or the lifestyle and gastronomy of the Mediterranean; and the second, was his version of a Dirty Martini.

The national finals were held in Sydney at The Bar at the End of the Wharf, where four judges (including the Global Brand Ambassador for Gin Mare, the Chilean-born Jorje Balbnatin) made their decision after blind tastings. The other finalists were from Sydney (four of them), WA, Melbourne and one other from QLD. Pez had to make the two cocktails in 10 minutes. (Oh, and who was enjoying lunch while the judging was
happening – none other than Australian actress Cate Blanchet!!) He’s The Laneway’s main man and we are immensely proud of him, so come in and have a chat.

(Beer lovers take note: Pez will host The Laneway’s Beer Tasting event on July 31, he’ll show off a selection of local and international craft beers, matched back with shared plates from The Laneway’s new menu. $60 per person –book now!).

Supporting Plates for Mates

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Plates for Mates is a national fundraising event conceived by a group of Australia’s leading chefs to support friend, Matt Golinski. Matt tragically lost his wife, Rachael, and their three daughters in a home fire on Boxing Day 2011. Matt sustained third degree burns to over 40% of his body and until recently was in a medically induced coma at RBWB.

The initiative has been coordinated by Janelle Bloom, Manu Feildel, George Calombaris, Damian Heads, Gary Mehigan and Alastair McLeod – as an urgent call to arms to raise funds for the Matthew Golinski Recovery Fund and the McComb Foundation.

The Urbane Group is proud to be supporting the Plates for Mates fundraising event and for the month of April pledges to do the following:

  • The Laneway will donate $1 for every burger sold on Fridays in April to Plates for Mates, and will ask patrons to do likewise.
  • The Euro will donate $1 from every table all April and ask patrons to do likewise.
  • Urbane will donate $2.50 for every guest that orders from the degustation menu all April, and will ask patrons to follow suite.

If you’d like to make a donation to Plates for Mates you can do so via its website. Visit www.platesformates.com.au

Wine flights starting @ the zinc bar in The Euro!

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

We’re excited to be introducing wine flights to our zinc bar at The Euro. Commencing Monday 30 January, come in and enjoy two exciting wine flights on offer for the month of February.

The first is a selection of two great Austrian Gruner Veltliner’s and one Riesling, from Ludwig Hiedler, Weingut Hirsch and the legendary Rudi Pichler.  After the 1985 glycerol scandal that rocked the Austrian wine industry, Austria has had a movement back to its organic roots producing some of the best white wines in Europe. This wine flight is a real treat!

The second is a tasting through one of the less recognised, but certainly just as thrilling, regions of Sicily.  We will be featuring three natural wine producers: Cottanera Barbazzle, Occhipinti, and Cos.  All of these red wines are made with native varietals including Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero D’Avola. Be sure to try this wine flight while it’s on offer – your palate will thank you later!

So why not grab a friend, (or if it’s been a tough day, hey, just yourself!), enjoy some great wine and friendly conversation as you take this journey with one our friendly staff members!

Austrian wine flight 225ml*  $30
Sicilian wine flight   225ml*  $32

* Standard wine pours are 150ml, so each flight consists of three by 75ml pours, for a total of 1.5 standard glasses of wine.
